Ah, Easter Sunday! There are so many ways to celebrate. Maybe you dress up in your brand-new Easter get up and attend church in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You might celebrate by taking the kids to a local Easter Egg Hunt. Or maybe you invite your friends over for a backyard cookout in celebration of Spring. Whichever way you decide to celebrate, these quilled Easter earrings will be the icing on the cake to finish off your ensemble in style.

Supplies:

• 15” strips of the 3mm, 5mm, and 7mm quilling strips in various colors

• Quilling tool

Tips

• Tearing, rather than cutting, helps the paper ends blend when gluing so that you don’t see the perfect cut in the final product.

• You really don’t have to measure. Everything here is made with either a full 39cm (15.35”) strip, 1/2 strip, 1/4 strip, 1/8 strip, or 1/16 strip.

• To keep your glue from clogging when you are using this tiny applicator, rest it upside down on a damp sponge.

• Take your quilling tool and gently roll over the edges of your pieces to get them even.

Long-Eared Bunny Earrings

For the long-eared bunny, you’ll be using 5mm strips of quilling paper for the body and 3mm strips for everything else.

To make the bunny’s body, take three 5mm strips of white and glue them end to end creating one long strip. If you have a curling coach, you can use it to roll this strip into a tight coil, if not, you can roll the tight coil using your fingers. Glue to secure. You’ll need two of these.

For the bunny’s head, take three 3mm strips of white and glue them end to end creating one long strip. Roll this into a tight coil and glue to secure. Make two of these.

For each foot, roll a ¼ strip of pink into a loose coil using the number 8 circle template for sizing. Glue to secure and shape into a teardrop. Using a ½ strip of white, wrap around the teardrop, gluing as you go.

Let’s make each ear using one strip of pink and roll it into a loose coil, allowing it to unroll naturally. Glue to secure. Shape into a long teardrop. Take a strip of white and wrap around the pink teardrop, gluing as you go.

To make the bunny’s nose, take a 1/8 strip of pink and roll it into a tight coil. Glue to secure.

Glue the bunny’s head to the front of the body on the top half. Glue the feet into place, along with the google eyes and the nose. The ears are glued to the back of the bunny’s head.

Baby Chick Earrings

This baby chick uses 3mm strips of quilling paper in yellow and orange.

For each chick, take four strips of yellow and glue them end to end creating one long strip. Roll into a tight coil and glue to secure. This is the chick’s body.

For each chick’s head, take three strips of yellow and glue them end to end, and roll them into a tight coil. Glue to secure.

Take a ½ strip of yellow for each wing and roll into a loose coil allowing them to unroll naturally. Glue to secure and shape each into a curved teardrop.

To make each foot, using a ½ strip of orange, roll into a loose coil, allowing it to unroll naturally. Glue to secure and shape into a marquis.

For the beaks, take a 1/8 strip of orange, roll it into a tight coil, glue it to secure, and shape it into a teardrop.

For the chick’s hair, take a ¼ strip of yellow, and fold it in half. Curl the two loose ends and glue in place on the chick’s head with the curls at the top and bring the rest of this strip around to the bottom of the chick’s head, gluing in place.

Now glue all the pieces together as shown and add the google eyes.

Baby Duck Earrings

The baby duck uses 3mm strips of yellow and orange.

For the duck’s head, take two strips of yellow, glue them end to end to create one long strip, and roll them into a tight coil. Glue to secure.

For its body, glue two strips of yellow end to end to create one long strip and roll it into a loose coil, sizing with the #20 circle template. Glue to secure and shape into a curved teardrop.

To make the wing, take one strip of yellow and roll it into a loose coil sizing with the #12 circle template. Glue to secure and shape into a curved teardrop.

For the feet, take a ¼ strip of orange and roll it into a loose coil, allowing it to unroll naturally. Glue to secure and shape into a marquis.

Take a 1/16 strip and fold it in half to create the beak. We’ll trim this later.

For the hanger loop, take a 1/8 strip of yellow and roll it into a tiny ring coil using a needle tool, this will leave a clean opening in the center to add your jewelry findings.

TIP: Making these tiny ring coils can be a challenge, just keep trying until you get your technique down. You can do it.

Now let’s put it all together. Glue together as shown, add the google eye and trim the beak.

Repeat for the other duck.

Bunny Bum Earrings

The bunny bum is made using 3mm strips of white and pink, except for the tail. The tail is made using 7mm strips of white.

Take five strips of white and glue them end to end, creating one long strip. Roll into a tight coil and glue to secure. Make another one for the other bum.

For each foot, take one strip of pink and a ½ strip of white and glue them end to end. Starting with the pink strip, roll into a tight coil and glue to secure. Shape each into teardrops.

To make the tails, take a ½ strip of 7mm white and fringe one of the long ends. You can do this with shredding scissors or regular scissors. Roll into a tight coil and glue to secure. Press down and out on the fringes to make them flare out.

For the hanger, take a 1/8 strip of white, and using the needle tool, roll it into a tiny ring coil.

Glue the pieces together as shown with the tail and feet on the front of the body.

Lacy Easter Egg Earrings

The Easter egg is made with 3mm strips in mint green and light pink.

Using four strips of mint green, glue them end to end creating one long strip. Make two of these.

Wrap around the oval Quill On at the 10th tier down from the outside. Glue to secure and shape into an egg shape.

TIP: Use your fingernail to keep the edges even. The oval Quill On can be a bit challenging because of the smooth surface. Your strip is not going to stay in place while you are wrapping so put a dab of glue at the beginning as well as at the end of your strip. You’re also going to have to hold the strip in place as you are wrapping it to keep it from slipping. Use the fingernail of your index finger to hold in place until you get a couple of wraps going and as you are wrapping to help keep the paper strip straight. You’ll also use your fingernail to gently remove your oval from the Quill On so that it does not unravel. You’re going to use your fingernails a lot.

To fill the egg with the lacy look use a ½ strip of light pink and create the laces using the beehive technique.

• The beehive technique adds a lacy look like a filler.
• This beehive technique is simply just using a single long paper strip and your quilling tool to create many tightly rolled coils on the same strip.
• Insert the paper strip into the quilling tool.
• Roll your quilling tool a couple of turns and remove the tool.
• Re-insert your paper strip into the quilling tool about ½ inch from your first coil and roll again in the same direction for the same number of times.
• The quilling tool will roll the paper around itself, pulling in both ends of the strip of paper at the same time.
• The size of your coils will depend on how many turns you make in each roll. More turns will make a larger coil and fewer turns will make smaller coils and more of a wavy shape to your strip.
• You’ll want to keep the distance between each coil and turn your quilling tool the same number of times for each coil so that you’ll have evenly-sized coils that don’t come apart right away.
• You can use these coils to fill in large areas of your quilling projects. Example: used inside of flower petals or earrings giving a lacy look.
• Keep adding beehive coils until the space is filled.
• You can also roll two different colored strips at the same time giving you a dual-toned look.

To make the hanger, take 1/8 strip of mint green and roll them into a tiny ring coil using the needle tool.

Stabilizing and Sealing Your Earrings

Using a tiny brush, paint a coat of the PPA glue or Mod Podge around the insides of your design. Let dry.

Paint a coat around the outside edges with the glue and let dry.

Paint a coat on the top and bottom, letting dry after each side.

Using a slightly larger paintbrush, paint a coat of sealant, covering all sides, allowing it to dry after each side of your design as you did with the glue.

TIP: The sealant may stretch across the openings in your design forming a bubble. If you don’t want this effect, just blow it out before it dries.

Finishing Touches

Simply attach your jewelry findings and you’re good to go!
