Supplies:
- 3mm quilling strips of paper in various colors (the strips used for the purpose of this tutorial are 39cm in length (15.35”)
- Quilling tool
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Black Sharpie
- Good Quality Cardstock, white and colored
- Ink Pads and Stamps
- Shape Template
- String
- Curling Coach
- Cutting and Scoring Board
- Glue – PPA glue
- Quill On border buddy
Tips
- Tearing, rather than cutting, helps the paper ends blend when gluing so that you don’t see the perfect cut in the final product.
- To loosen the fibers of the paper strips, run your fingernail along the strip as if you were curling the strip. This helps the paper roll smoothly with no creases.
- You really don’t have to measure. Everything here is made with either a full 39cm (15.35”) strip, ½ strip, or ¼ strip, etc.
- To keep your glue from clogging when you are using this tiny applicator, rest it upside down on a damp sponge.
- Take your quilling tool and gently roll over the edges of your pieces to get them even.
Prepare Gift Tags
These gift tags measure 2” x 3”. (I use a Cricut and I found a gift tag shape in the shapes icon).
You can cut these by hand as well using a cutting board. The colored center of the cards is 1.75” x 2.436”.
Glue the colored cardstock to the gift tag cutouts. Gift tags are ready for embellishing.
The Gift Box Gift Tag
Take three strips of red and glue them end to end creating a triple strip that is about 46” long. Roll into a loose coil and size using the #20 circle template. Glue to secure and shape into a square.
Take two ¼ strips of white and roll each into a loose coil, no sizing with a template, just let them uncoil naturally in your fingers. Glue to secure and shape them into teardrops.
Take the remainder of the white strip and glue it around your square like a ribbon around a gift box. Glue your gift box to the tag and add the bow pieces as shown.
The Christmas Tree Gift Tag
You’ll need ten ½ strips of green and roll each into a tight coil, glue to secure. Remember to roll your quilling tool over the edges of your coils so that the edges are even (see Tip above).
Take ¼ strip of yellow and roll into a loose coil, allowing it to uncoil naturally, glue to secure, and shape into a 4-point star.
Using ½ strip of brown, roll into a tight coil and glue to secure.
Glue pieces to the gift tag as shown.
The Candle Gift Tag
Using three ½ strips of white, roll each into a tight coil and glue to secure.
Take ¼ strip of yellow, roll into a loose coil, allowing to uncoil naturally, glue to secure, and shape into a curved teardrop.
Take four 1/8 strips of dark green and roll each into a loose coil, allowing it to uncoil naturally, glue to secure and shape each into a curved marquis.
Using three ¼ strips of red, roll each into a tight coil and glue to secure.
Glue, as shown, to the front of your gift tag.
The Angel Gift Tag
Take one strip of light blue, roll into a loose coil and size using the #15 circle template. Glue to secure and shape into a teardrop.
Using two ¼ strips of white, roll each into a loose coil, allowing to uncoil naturally, glue to secure and shape each into a curved teardrop.
Take one strip of peach and roll into a tight coil. Glue to secure.
Take ½ strip of yellow, roll into a tight coil, glue to secure, then flatten.
Glue pieces to the front of a gift tag.
The Candy Cane Gift Tag
Take four ½ strips of white, roll each into a tight coil, and glue to secure.
Take four ½ strips of red, roll each into a tight coil, and glue to secure.
Using two ¼ strips of green, roll each into a loose coil, allowing to uncoil naturally, glue to secure and shape into marquis.
Glue pieces to the front of a gift tag.
The Reindeer Gift Tag
You’ll need five strips of dark brown glued end to end, creating one long strip. Roll into a tight coil and glue to secure.
TIP: I do suggest using your curling coach for this, it will be easier to keep the roll tight and neat.
Take one strip of dark brown, roll into a loose coil sizing with the #12 circle template. Glue to secure and shape into a half-circle.
Using ¼ strip of red, roll into a tight coil and glue to secure.
For each ear, take ¼ strip of tan and ¼ strip of dark brown and glue end to end creating one strip. Roll into a loose coil starting with the tan. Allow to uncoil naturally, glue to secure and shape into a marquis.
For each eye, you’ll need 1/8 strip of black and ¼ strip of white, glued end to end. Roll into a tight coil, starting with the black, glue to secure.
For the antlers, take two ¼ strips of tan, roll each into a natural loose coil, glue to secure and shape into a marquis. Then take four 1/8 strips of tan, roll each into a natural loose coil, glue to secure, and shape into a marquis.
Glue pieces to the front of a gift tag.
String of Lights Gift Tag
Take ¼ strip of red, yellow, blue, and green and roll each into a natural loose coil. Glue to secure and shape each into a teardrop.
Place the lights on the front of the gift tag as shown. Before you glue in place, draw the little squares for the sockets and the string connecting them. Then glue the lights in place.
Stringed Ornaments Gift Tag
You’ll need ½ strips of various colors rolled into tight coils.
Glue the ornaments to the front of the gift tag. Using an ink pen, draw the strings and a bow on each string.
A Purple Ornament Gift Tag
Take a double strip (two strips glued end to end) of purple and roll into a loose coil, sizing with the #30 circle template. If your coil does not open to the full #30, no worries, just go with it.
Glue to secure holding the coils in place, as shown, with tweezers. You will need to glue these coils to secure them, or they will move back towards the center instead of staying in place.
Using ¼ strip of purple, roll into a natural loose coil. Glue to secure and shape into a rectangle.
Take 1/8 strip of green and roll into a C scroll. You can take a look at the article The Different Techniques of Quilling on how to do this.
Glue pieces to the front of a gift tag.
The Poinsettia Gift Tag
You’ll need seven ¼ strips of red, rolled into a natural loose coil and shaped into a marquis.
Take 1/8 strip of yellow and roll into a tight coil, glue to secure.
Using two ¼ strips of green, roll each into a natural loose coil, glue to secure, and shape into a curved marquis.
Take ¼ strip of green and fold in half. Roll into an uneven V scroll.
Take 1/8 strip of green and roll into a loose scroll.
Glue pieces to the front of a gift tag.
The Beehive Ornament Gift Tag
Using a double strip of red, wrap around the 8th tier of a circle quill on.
TIP: Use your fingernail to keep the edges even. The circle quill on is a bit challenging because of the smooth surface. Your strip is not going to stay in place while you are wrapping so put a dab of glue at the beginning as well as at the end of your strip. You’re also going to have to hold the strip in place as you are wrapping to keep it from slipping. Use the fingernail of your index finger to hold in place until you get a couple of wraps going and as you are wrapping to help keep the paper strip straight. You’ll also use your fingernail to gently remove your triangle from the quill on so that it does not unravel. You’re going to use your fingernails a lot.
Take ¼ strip of tan and roll into a natural loose coil. Glue to secure and shape into a half-circle.
Take another ¼ strip of tan and roll into a tight coil.
Glue the pieces to the front of the gift tag. You’re going to fill the ornament using the Beehive Technique.
- Beehive Technique adds a lacy look as a filler.
- This beehive technique is simply just using a single long paper strip and your quilling tool to create many tightly rolled coils on the same strip.
- Insert the paper strip into the quilling tool.
- Roll your quilling tool a couple of turns and remove the tool.
- Re-insert your paper strip into the quilling tool about ½ inch from your first coil and roll again in the same direction for the same number of times.
- The quilling tool will roll the paper around itself, pulling in both ends of the strip of paper at the same time.
- The size of your coils will depend on how many turns you make in each roll. More turns will make a larger coil and fewer turns will make smaller coils and more of a wavy shape to your strip.
- You’ll want to keep the distance between each coil and turn your quilling tool the same number of times for each coil so that you’ll have evenly-sized coils that don’t come apart right away.
- You can use these coils to fill in large areas of your quilling projects. Example: used inside of flower petals or earrings giving a lacy look.
- Keep adding beehive coils until the space is filled.
- You can also roll two different colored strips at the same time giving you a dual-toned look.
Finally, take 1/8 strip of green and roll into an S scroll, and glue in place on the front of the gift tag.
The Bells Gift Tag
Using three green strips, roll each into loose coils, sizing with the #15 circle template. Glue to secure then shape into holly leaves.
Take two ½ strips of yellow and roll each into loose coils, sizing with the #10 circle template. Glue to secure and shape into half circles.
Using two 1/8 strips of a lighter yellow, roll each into tight coils and glue to secure.
Take three 1/8 strips of red and roll each into a tight coil and glue to secure.
Take ¼ strip of green and roll into an uneven V scroll.
Glue pieces to the front of a gift tag as shown.
The Santa Gift Tag
Using four strips of peach, glued together end to end, roll into a tight coil, and glue to secure.
For the beard, take one strip of white and roll into a loose coil, sizing with the #15 circle template. Glue to secure and shape into a triangle. (Well, sort of. You’ll want to curve it somewhat so that it looks more like a beard, but it’ll be easier to do this when you are gluing into place on the card. The same goes for the hat).
The mustache is two ¼ strips of white, rolled into natural loose coils and shaped into curved teardrops.
The white part of the hat is ½ strip rolled into a natural loose coil and shaped into a half-circle. You’ll notice that this will be more of a smashed half-circle by the end.
The curly hair is made with 1/8 strips of white that are curled into same side scrolls.
For the hat, take a strip of red and roll into a loose coil, sized with the #15 circle template, and shaped into a triangle, for now.
The pompom is ½ strip of white rolled into a tight coil.
For the nose, take 1/8 strip of pink and roll into a tight coil.
The eyes are 1/8 strips of white that are rolled into tight coils. Once glued, take a sharpie, and make the pupils.
Glue pieces in place as shown, shaping the beard and hat, and holding in place until the glue sets a bit.
The Snowman Gift Tag
For the bottom of the snowman, take five strips of white, glued end to end, and roll into a tight coil.
For the head, take three strips of white, glued end to end, and roll into a tight coil.
The hat is ½ strip of black, rolled into a loose coil, sized using the #10 circle template, then shaped into a square.
The brim is 1/8 strip of black that has been folded several times.
The scarf is ¼ strip of red, folded, and trimmed to size.
Glue pieces into place on the gift tag and use a sharpie to dot the face and buttons.
Now all your gift tags are ready for the final touches.
Final Touches
To finish your gift tags, cut your decorative string about 5-8” in length. String through the holes and tie.
Conclusion
There you go! Add these to your gift wrapping and sit back and watch their faces as they’ll be amazed by your work.
